Because all casual clothing is not suitable for the office, here are some handy guidelines that will help you in your morning struggle of deciding what to wear to work;
Pants - It is usually best to opt for a somewhat tailored slim or wide fit pant in an office environment however the general rule should be that your pants should never be sheer or see through and unless you are in a gymnasium environment or similar you should steer clear of any spandex or other form-fitting pants such as leggings, if they are acceptable try to refrain from showing your butt (ie wear a longer looser top to compensate for the fit of the legging).Skirts and Dresses - Skirts that are split at or below the knee are acceptable. Dresses and skirt length should be no shorter than 10cms above the knee when sitting down. Should your skirt be 10cms above the knee when standing then ensure you are wearing opaque stockings. Anything shorter than this that rides halfway up the thigh is inappropriate for work.
Shirts, Tops, Blouses - Plain cotton shirts (sans offensive slogan or pictures), collared shirts, sweaters, embellished/embroidered tops, polos, and turtlenecks are acceptable for work. No tank tops, midriff tops, strapless or halter tops. If wearing a singlet is allowable then choose a thick strap or racer back style over spaghetti straps. In general, don’t show too much flesh.. In any workplace, showing cleavage, your back, your stomach or your underwear is not appropriate for a place of business (this goes for Personal Trainers and exercise instructors).
Jackets - If ever in doubt wear a blazer –they dress anything up but also look classy casual with a pair of flats. Most jackets are generally okay but dependent on the environment avoid leathers and fleece.
Shoes and Footwear - I am a sucker for a heel BUT if this doesn’t work for you then ballet flats, loafers and leather deck-type shoes are acceptable for work. Thongs, slippers, uggs and crocs are not okay for work (and in my opinion crocs should be banned from everywhere).
Jewellery & Makeup - Look nice but don’t go overboard – don’t do yourself up like you are going for a night on the town. Also, never show body piercings or tattoos if you can avoid it – some things are best kept to yourself.
